This allows for low-cost two-dimensional arrays with applications such as optical mice, barcode scanners, and 3D sensing. VCSELs enabled the development of ToF cameras for facial recognition in smartphones. Vertical external cavity surface emitting laser diodes (VECSEL) incorporate an external cavity and high reflective mirror, allowing for significantly higher output powers of watts.
