The reverse osmosis process utilizes semipermeable membranes with even smaller pore sizes (<0.0001 microns) than NF membranes to filter out dissolved ions, salts, and organic molecules. RO is commonly utilized in the desalination of seawater, purification of drinking water, and production of ultrapure water for industrial applications. Ultrafiltration is a pressure-driven membrane separation process with pore sizes varying from 0.01 to 0.1 microns, allowing it to remove larger molecules than NF and RO can achieve. UF is often employed for protein concentration, virus removal, and clarification of fruit juices and beverages.
